Course sections

An introduction to PET–CT
The basics of the PET–CT equipment to aid understanding in day-to-day practice. It will also cover radionuclides, radiopharmaceuticals and their uses, radiopharmacy and generators, as well as FDG mechanism of action and other non-FDG radiopharmaceuticals. Finally, this section will go over the acquisition of PET data from positron emission through to annihilation, LORs, coincidences and image reconstruction.

The PET–CT patient journey – preparation
Learn the aspects of performing a PET–CT scan that are related to the patient, focussing on the use of 18F-FDG since this is used in the majority of PET–CT examinations. It will cover some of the common clinical indications, contraindications and the importance of the preparation of the patient for the examination.

The PET–CT patient journey – scanning
The important things to consider when setting up and performing a PET–CT scan, including radiation implications for both staff and the patient, along with the effects on the resulting images of poor setup technique or parameter selection.

PET–CT: Radiation protection
An overview of radiation protection as applied to PET–CT imaging, focusing on the practical steps that need to be taken to keep patients, staff and visitors safe, in compliance with the relevant legislation. Topics covered include departmental infrastructure and controlled areas, roles and responsibilities of staff, drawing up injections, waste disposal and the concepts of time distance and shielding.

PET–CT: The clinician’s perspective
PET as part of molecular imaging, focusing primarily on 18F-FDG PET–CT but also looking at other molecular tracers which are commonly used for PET imaging in current practice. Clinical examples of normal biodistribution of 18F-FDG are covered, along with some examples of why patient preparation is so important particularly in specific cases such as diabetes, brain and cardiac imaging.

Future Directions
A summary of what has been covered in the course before delving into the current developments and possible future directions of PET and molecular imaging as a whole.
