Radiation Safety Management Group Members
Peter Hiles is Head of Radiation Physics in North Wales and the current chair of the BIR’s Radiation Safety Special Interest Group. He is also one of the BIR trustees of the Mayneord Philips Trust (http://www.m-pss.org/). Peter has over 30 years experience in Medical Physics and has acted as an adviser to the IAEA and EU on radiation protection and quality assurance.
Liz Benson achieved an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in 2006. Following from this, she gained an MSc in Medical Engineering and Physics from King’s College London. She has subsequently gained an IPEM Diploma and is a registered Clinical Scientist, Chartered Scientist and Laser Protection Adviser. Liz works in ionising and non-ionising radiation protection, most recently at King’s College Hospital London and is involved in lecturing on the King’s College London Medical Engineering and Physics MSc course.
Katharine Thomson is a Principal Physicist at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, specialising in Nuclear Medicine. Previously, she worked in Oxford and Taunton in nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology, and was part of the first cohort of the Scientist Training Programme. She is responsible for communication and the webpage for the Radiation Safety SIG, and also represents the BIR at the Society of Radiological Protection’s International Committee, which connects the UK radiation protection community with the worldwide scene.
Helen Hughes is a radiographer with over 30 years experience, and has a background in CT and Interventional radiology. Her current role is head of Quality and Governance for the largest Health Board in Wales. She is a passionate believer in patient centred high quality safe care and is an active member of the BIR Radiation Safety Special Interest Group (SIG) and leads the Imaging quality forum for Wales.
