First in the UK: Next Generation 3D Mammography System Transforms Breast Imaging in Southampton

  • First in the UK to deliver care using the MAMMOMAT B.brilliant from Siemens Healthineers
  • Serving over 100,000 women through the regional breast screening service
  • Enhanced patient experience with the fastest wide-angle tomosynthesis scan on the market

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) has become the first hospital in the UK to install and deliver patient care using the MAMMOMAT B.brilliant mammography system from Siemens Healthineers. This pioneering technology introduces the widest tomosynthesis angle and fastest scan time—under five seconds—offering a more efficient and comfortable experience for patients across Southampton and South Hampshire.

Now accredited by the NHS Breast Screening Programme for use in clinical practice, the system is a major milestone in breast cancer detection and care delivery. As part of a service that screens more than 100,000 women annually, UHS is leading the way with a next-generation platform designed to improve patient outcomes and enhance the screening journey.

The MAMMOMAT B.brilliant is the first mammography solution from Siemens Healthineers to feature PlatinumTomo, a combination of:

  • 50° wide-angle tomosynthesis
  • Flying focal spot technology
  • Premia AI reconstruction

This integration ensures sharper imaging, improved cancer detection, and minimal motion blur—all without compromising patient comfort or clinical throughput.

With over 56,000 new cases of breast cancer diagnosed annually in the UK, speed and image clarity are critical. The new system offers:

  • High-resolution 3D imaging in just five seconds
  • Increased diagnostic accuracy for clinicians
  • Faster, smoother exams for patients

UHS’s adoption of the MAMMOMAT B.brilliant marks a significant step forward in breast health, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, compassion, and clinical excellence in women’s imaging.
