Military theme for Midlands launch

David WilsonThe brand new Midlands regional branch launch went with a bang, on 9 October 2014, with an event on military trauma imaging in Birmingham, attended by over 70 radiologists, trainees, radiographers and physicists. Chaired by radiologist Dr Jonathan Hopkins, the event included speakers CPO Catherine Bean, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Ballard and Lieutenant Iain Gibb followed by networking drinks.

Dr David Wilson launched the evening with the first public showing of a short film about the BIR. Then CPO Catherine Bean was the first speaker with an overview of radiology across all branches of the military covering the key aspects of life as a deployed radiographer. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Ballard gave an engaging talk about the fundamentals of military trauma imaging and how they apply to everyone in radiography. Finally, Lieutenant Colonel Iain Gibb talked about the lessons learnt from post mortem imaging in a military context and the role CT can play.

WatchingMembers and non-members gave the BIR very positive feedback on the evening. As one participant commented “The event was both well organised and delivered. The course programme clearly laid out the educational value of the event and the speakers were well versed in their subjects. I found the event both intellectually stimulating and of general interest.”

The new Midlands branch is led by our members and will organise educational events across the entire Midlands region (Birmingham, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, West Midlands, Warwickshire Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Rutland and Northants). All BIR members in the region are welcome to join and can take an active role in organising events, activities and social events. Read more about the branch and how to get involved here
