The Distinguished Service Medal has been awarded to Gunter Dombrowe, who stepped down as President of the Radiology and Oncology Congresses (ROC) in October and is a Fellow and Past President of the BIR.

Dr Jane Phillips-Hughes, President of the BIR, presented the award on 1 November 2018 at the BIR Annual Congress Dinner. She paid a heartfelt tribute to Gunter, praising his commitment to the BIR and to his dedication to the radiology and radiation oncology community, in particular his enthusiastic support of multidisciplinary education.

Gunter has played a key role in the Radiology and Oncology Congresses (ROC) which oversees the UK’s largest annual imaging and oncology congress (now known as UKIO) .  His expertise, diplomacy and leadership in this role was recognised by the BIR, who are partners in UKIO along with SCoR and IPEM.

Gunter was Managing Director of Siemens Healthcare for the UK and Northern Europe and a member of the board of Siemens plc, who support professional education through their membership of the BIR, Platinum Sponsorship of its educational events, and support of other activities such as BIR prizes for radiology and oncology professionals.

Dr Phillips-Hughes said “Gunter has been a unique and remarkable colleague, role model and leader for all of us at the BIR. He has broken down barriers and enabled the multi-professional approach to our work that we value very highly.  We are very grateful to him and we are very pleased to be able to recognise  his enormous contribution to the BIR with this award.”

Gunter Dombrowe  said “I am delighted, but also humbled to have been given this prestigious award. When I first joined the BIR 40 years ago, I never thought the institute would play such a prominent role in my professional life. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to contribute to its development and to the wider community of imaging and oncology in the UK.”
