Recognising Excellence: BIR/Bayer Make it Better Service Award and BIR George du Boulay Priming Awards Presented

The BIR offers a number of awards throughout the year but the majority are presented at our Annual Congress in November to celebrate research, projects and achievements in imaging and radiotherapy.

Below are details of two awards we are proud to present to the successful recipients:

BIR/Bayer Make it Better Service Award is received by Chirag Lakhani, Superintendent Radiotherapy Radiographer at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. Having worked at multiple NHS trusts, the novel and streamlined pathway he observed led to the submission for the award. The award is for the project “Implementing a 17-day pathway for patients undergoing radical radiotherapy for Head and Neck Cancer.”

Chirag commented: “I am truly honoured to receive the BIR/Bayer Make it Better Service Award, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the British Institute of Radiology for this recognition. This award is a reflection of the collective effort of the entire Head and Neck Cancer Oncology MDT team at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre. It is their dedication, vision, and hard work that made the significant improvement in the pathway for patients referred for head and neck radiotherapy possible, ultimately reducing treatment times and enhancing patient care. This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment and collaboration of every member of the team, and I share this honour with them.”

BIR George du Boulay Pump Priming Award is received by Dr Vinson Chan, an ST1 Clinical Radiology Trainee on the interventional radiology pathway at Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. With a strong background in collaborative networks and interventional oncology he is the principle investigator of the DEFINE-IO study.

Dr Chan commented: “We are incredibly honoured to receive the BIR George du Boulay Award. While Interventional Oncology is transforming cancer care, we currently lack a unified research strategy. This funding is vital; it allows us to deliver the DEFINE-IO study, a UNITE collaborative project which uniquely combines national Delphi consensus with Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). This innovative methodology enables us to build a roadmap that is not just aspirational, but practically deliverable, ensuring resources are directed toward the research questions that matter most to patients and clinicians."
