On 15th January 2026, a new, fully evidence-based and long-awaited artificial intelligence textbook for radiographers and other medical imaging and oncology professionals was published by Springer. Its lead editors are all radiographers (Professors Christina Malamateniou, Karen Knapp, Maryann Hardy and Aarthi Ramlaul), but the book's contributors — more than 100! — come from across learned societies and professional backgrounds including radiology, radiography, medical physics, data science, business, implementation science, psychology, medical informatics, ethics and engineering. They serve different areas of practice (clinical, research, education, industry and policy-making) and represent a wide geographical distribution globally, including many colleagues from the British Institute of Radiology.

With more than 350 pages, 15 thoughtfully organised chapters — designed to be taught or read with equal ease in the classroom, the clinic or the research lab — a handy glossary, and more than 20 case studies providing relatable, real-world examples of AI implementation, it is as comprehensive and interactive as a textbook can be. The multidisciplinary team behind it only adds to its breadth and depth.

The product of more than six years of planning, the book condenses over 100 years of collective experience in AI and publishing among its editors. Content and format were discussed and refined across approximately 100 team meetings, with careful attention to priorities and a constant focus on the needs of the workforce, patients and students. Although originally aimed at radiographers, it is accessible to anyone working within the medical imaging and oncology ecosystem.

It is available to purchase online as an e-book, softcover or hardcover at: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-032-05080-9

In just its first eight weeks, it has sold more than 6,500 electronic copies through the main publisher alone, and has sold out twice — both online and at the European Congress of Radiology textbook booth. We hope it proves a truly useful resource for medical imagers!

Book signing also took place at the British Institute of Radiology AI Congress, photo below of Professors Christina Malamateniou.
