Stuart Green

Professor Stuart Green was President of the BIR between 2008-10. He is Director of Medical Physics and Lead Scientist at University Hospital Birmingham, and Honorary Professor of Physics at University of Birmingham. In Medical Physics at University Hospital he leads a department of approximately 140 scientists, technologists and other NHS staff delivering services in nuclear medicine, radiotherapy physics, radiation safety, MRI physics and computing. As Lead Scientist he works with others to coordinate education activities across all areas of Healthcare Science in the Trust. At the University of Birmingham he is engaged mainly in research utilising the University’s unique accelerators, the MC40 cyclotron and the 3MV Dynamitron. This includes recent work with the Pravda team developing new approaches to imaging with proton beams (see www.pravda.uk.com) and a long standing interest in boron neutron capture therapy.

Professor Green has published around 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers, numerous book chapters and popular science articles on current topics. He is a regular speaker on advanced radiotherapy and particularly on proton and particle therapy, and supervises PhD students in these areas.
