What is IRPA?
IRPA is the international voice of the radiation protection profession: an association of radiation protection professionals from around the world, linked through national and regional radiation protection societies.
What does it do?
IRPA aims to promote worldwide enhancement of radiation protection culture, practice and professional competence, by providing benchmarks, publishing guidance and bulletins, and running events. Its main areas of interest include education, training and qualifications, and radiation protection culture. It has topic groups on the public understanding of radiation risk, security of radioactive sources, radiation safety culture in higher education, and non-ionising radiation, among others. IRPA also liaises with other international bodies such as the ICRP and ICRU.
Why should I join?
If you have an interest in radiation protection then IRPA membership through the BIR is for you, whether you want to contribute to international work via consultations or working groups, or use resources such as publications and bulletins. If you’re within the first 10 years of your career, you can also get involved in the IRPA Young Generation Network.
In addition, the greater the number of IRPA members from UK professional societies, the more delegates the UK can take to the four-yearly IRPA Congresses and the stronger the voice of the UK radiation protection community.
How do I join?
In the UK, our main “linking society” to IRPA is the Society of Radiological Protection, but BIR members can become IRPA members through SRP by telling the BIR they wish to become IRPA members.
IRPA membership through the BIR is free, because the BIR pays its members’ IRPA membership fees. You can join by submitting your details below.
