Philips provides new digital pathology solution

Lorna Cottrell , Consultant Pathologist And Clinical Pathology Lead At University Hospital Crosshouse4 June 2020

A digital diagnostic solution to enable pathologists to socially distance when needed and introduce new flexible ways of working has been introduced at rural University Hospital Crosshouse in Kilmarnock. This is a vital initiative for this rural community both during and after the COVID-19 crisis.

The Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution has an Ultra Fast Scanner and image management system. It means pathologists can work from home more often and reducing hours at the microscope which puts stress on the back and neck. Digital cases can be reviewed remotely by consultants and used at meetings.

Dr Lorna Cornell, Consultant Pathologist said “We are energised by the many possibilities that introducing digital pathology into the hospital might unlock. If our learnings inspire other hospitals and trusts in other coastal or rural communities to do the same, it would be exciting to demonstrate that digital pathology solutions have a role to play in many different sized communities – not just hospitals in urban or city centres."
