The British Institute of Radiology (BIR), in conjunction with the British Medical Ultrasound Society (BMUS), the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is making The Safe Use of Ultrasound in Medical Diagnosis, freely available as part of the BIR’s open access initiative, BIR Open.
The book is edited by Dr Gail ter Haar who is currently chair of both the British and European committees for medical ultrasound safety, and team leader in the division of radiotherapy and imaging at The Institute of Cancer Research, London.
Sonographers and other practitioners increasingly need to be knowledgeable about the safety of a diagnostic ultrasound scan, as the onus has now shifted from the manufacturers to the person performing the scan.
This book, now in its third edition, is written for the practitioner and covers basic concepts important to the safe use of ultrasound and directs readers to extensive literature on the topic.
Helpful margin notes emphasise important ‘take home messages’ and make this the ’must have’ handbook for all practitioners keen to learn the essentials or update their knowledge on safe scanning techniques.
