The Board of Radiology and Oncology Congresses (ROC) is looking for a new Vice Chair following the retirement of the current Vice Chair. It is envisaged that the Vice Chair will replace the current Chair on their retirement within the next 12 months.
ROC is a registered charity (number 1087939) and a limited company with the following objective:
“The object of the Charity shall be to advance education in radiology, oncology and related sciences particularly by the provision of congresses pertaining to the radiation sciences as applied to medicine and the dissemination for the public benefit of the useful results of reports of research arising from such congresses”(from Memorandum of Association).
The Members of the Board are:
The College of Radiographers (CoR)
The British Institute of Radiology (BIR)
The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM)
ROC has a trading subsidiary—ROC Events Ltd—to manage the educational events. ROCE donates its entire surplus to ROC.
“The purpose of ROC Events Ltd is to benefit Radiology and Oncology Congresses. The interests of ROC Events Ltd., its directors, creditors or employees, must all be secondary to those of the charity. In all decisions made in regard to activities of ROC Events Ltd by the Board of ROC Events Ltd., the interests of the charity must be paramount”.
Currently two multidisciplinary Congresses are organised:
- UKRC—UK Radiology Congresses. The major annual UK medical imaging congress
- UKRO—UK Radiation Oncology Congresses, held biennially.
ROC and ROC Events Ltd contract out the organising of the congresses.
ROC Board:The Board of Directors currently comprises:
- The three societies (normally represented by the President and Chief Executive/General Secretary, or their nominees, but each society has only one vote).
- The officers:
- Chair
- Vice-Chair
- Company Secretary
- Treasurer
- The Presidents or Co-Presidents of the Congresses.
ROCE Board: The Board of Directors currently comprises:
- The four officers of ROC
- The Chairs of the Exhibition and Marketing Committees (Operational Committee).
Job Role
Vice-Chair.
Role Summary
The role of the Vice-Chair is to deputise for and support the Chair in providing leadership and direction to the board. The Chair’s aim is to enable the board to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the Charity.
The Chair will ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations and to make sure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document.
In addition to the general responsibilities of a Director, the Chair has a number of tasks specific to their role.
Main Responsibilities of the Vice-Chair
The Vice-Chair has no specific responsibilities but to deputise and support the Chair whose responsibilities are:
- providing leadership for the board in their role of setting the strategy and policy of the organisation
- planning the annual cycle of board meetings and set the agendas
- chairing and facilitating the board meetings
- giving directions to board policy making
- monitoring that decisions taken at board meetings are implemented
- representing the organisation at appropriate events, meetings or functions
- acting as a spokesperson for the organisation where appropriate
- to ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects
- to safeguard the good name and values of the organisation
- maintain the financial stability of the organisation
- to protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity's funds.

- understanding of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of Members and Directors.
Desirable Experience
- prior experience of committee/trustee work
- knowledge of the radiology and radiology and oncology education.
Time consideration
- The ROC Board meets at least twice a year
- The ROCE Board meets at least four times each year
- In addition the Chair is expected to represent the organisation at appropriate events, meetings or functions. Excluding UKRC and UKRO, it is estimated that this relates to up to five days each year.
Term
The term is for a maximum three year period. This is an honorary position.
