BIR/Bayer Make it Better Award presented at the BIR Annual Congress

10 October 2022

The BIR/Bayer Make it Better award was presented at the BIR Annual Congress to Ruby Callister and team from St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for improving the patient imaging pathway of pelvic and acetabular fixation patients in terms of quality of imaging, patient radiation dose and patient comfort.

The new pathway uses low-dose CT scanning in conjunction with 1-view radiographs and was found to be an effective and safe imaging modality in the post-operative assessment of pelvic and acetabular fracture fixation. It has improved the service through a lower patient radiation dose, easier logistics of obtaining images, improved patient comfort and higher quality images when compared to the traditional pathway of 3-view radiographs.

This award is given to the group of people who have demonstrated the best improvement in an aspect of service delivery by making it more effective, or have improved patient experience.

Ruby Callister, Senior Physicist, Radiation Protection said “We are delighted to win this award and feel confident that this brand-new pathway will enable the patients in our department to have a better and safer imaging experience.”

Dr Amarnath Challapalli from University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Trust received a Highly Commended Award for Lutetium PSMA Radio ligand therapy service development.

The awards were presented by Dr Sridhar Redla, BIR President and Fiona Spaziani, Business Development and Marketing Manager, Bayer.
