Peter Hiles DSM Award

We are delighted to announce that the BIR Distinguished Service Medal has been awarded to Peter Hiles, Chair of the BIR Radiation Safety Special Interest Group (SIG) and Head of Radiation Physics at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. Dr Sri Redla, President of the BIR, presented the award on 22 September 2022 at the BIR Annual Congress.

Peter Hiles has been Chair of the Radiation Safety SIG since 2014. He has been an energetic and innovative Chair, organising a host of events and initiatives to support safety in the workplace like the popular annual IR(ME)R update event, leading the hugely successful PPE project, which produced posters, video and a book on personal protective equipment for staff working with ionising radiation. His SIG has launched Radiation Safety Week, a new BIR Safety campaign and he led a joint project with other societies to produce Guidance on using Contact Shielding on patients which has been well received and cited internationally. The SIG has also made a huge contribution to the BIR’s first two video courses on Radiation Safety and Dose. Peter works tirelessly to support the work of the Institute and continues to inspire others with his encouraging leadership style.

Dr Redla said “Peter is an inspirational colleague and leader who works steadfastly to achieve his goals and is greatly respected and admired by his peers. Congratulations Peter!”

Peter Hiles said “I consider it a real honour and privilege and I cannot convey how grateful I am at being selected. In some ways this award was easy for me to obtain - due to the enjoyment I get from working with everyone at the BIR.”
