On 23 September 2020, Dr Sridhar Redla, Consultant Radiologist at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow was inaugurated as the new President of the BIR.
In an online handover ceremony attended by trustees and senior staff, Dr Jane Phillips-Hughes, past-President welcomed Dr Redla as President, adding that she was delighted to hand over the presidency to Dr Redla, whose absolute commitment to the BIR was assured.
Dr Redla said he had found the BIR to be a welcoming and warm place right from when he first joined the Institute and that he felt honoured to be chosen to be President. He paid tribute to the dynamic BIR team and their impressive ability to rise to new challenges. He also thanked his two predecessors, Andy Rogers and Jane, for all he had learnt from them and promised to maintain the multidisciplinary ethos of the BIR.
Dr Phillips-Hughes also made an emotional tribute to BIR staff and departing trustees by way of a special multiple stanza rhyme called “The Good Old BIR” which personally mentioned every trustee and the CEO and senior management team at the BIR for their contributions during her term of office.
In a moving tribute to Jane, Simon Thompson paid special tribute to her professional, cool and steady leadership. He described her as proactive, available, quick to respond and very good at knowing what is important and what to let go.
Dr Sridhar Redla is a Consultant Radiologist and Clinical Lead for the AI Assurance Board, at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow. He was previously Associate Medical Director for Cancer, Cardiology and Clinical Support Services.
He has been actively involved in training and management both as a trainee and a consultant. He was the College Tutor for Radiology and a member of the Eastern Deanery Radiology Training Committee between 2004 and 2007. He has then taken on various management roles in his Trust from 2007. Dr Redla was Chair of the BIR Clinical Imaging Special Interest Group (SIG) until he took on the role of Honorary Secretary. He remains an active member of both the Clinical Imaging and Clinical Intelligence & Informatics SIG and has been very involved in developing the BIR Annual Congress and Annual AI event as well as supporting the education team in their pivot to Virtual Events following the COVID-19 crisis.
