Dr Nick Screaton, Consultant Cardiothoracic Radiologist at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, has been inaugurated as the President of the British Institute of Radiology (BIR). Having previously served as Vice President of Publishing and a trustee, Dr Screaton has already played a key role in shaping the long-term strategy and vision of the organisation.
The inauguration event, held in September, saw the BIR team warmly welcoming Dr Screaton as President and extending gratitude to the outgoing president, Prof. Stephen Keevil.
Sara Purdy, CEO of the BIR, remarked, “This inauguration celebrates not only the start of a new leadership for the next two years but also our achievements. It was a pleasure to connect with so many partners, colleagues, and volunteers at the event, and to hear their thoughts on innovations within the healthcare sector and the future direction of the BIR as we continue to adapt to these ever-changing environments."
When asked what excites him most about his new role, Dr Screaton shared: "Given the BIR's agility as an organisation, the opportunities for change in the face of constant advances in healthcare is incredibly exciting. I look forward to collaborating closely with the team to expand the resources and knowledge we can provide, not just to our members but to the wider community. The fact that the BIR is multidisciplinary and brings together a number of healthcare professionals is quite unique and I look forward to us increasing our engagement with radiographers."
Dr Screaton has an interest in clinical guideline development and has contributed to several British Thoracic Society guidelines, including RCR referral guidelines. He has served terms as standing member of the NICE guidelines’ updates and NICE Quality Standards Advisory committees. He was President of the British Society of Thoracic Imaging between 2009-2013, Royal College of Radiologist Faculty Board Member between 2015-2019, RCR Council Member from 2019 to 2022, and a council member of the European Society of Thoracic Imaging since 2017 and became Secretary in 2022. His subspecialty interests include pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung diseases, airway diseases, and lung cancer screening.
