Meet Dan Pounder

Dan Pounder1. What was it about the BIR that made you want to join our Board of Trustees?
It was an incredible opportunity to use my finance skills to support an Institute where everyone is committed to science and its application to improve the lives of patients.

2. Can you sum the BIR up in three words?
Collaborative, inquiring, collegiate.

3. What do you see as being the biggest challenge for the BIR over the next few years?
Fundamentally it’s about remaining close to our members, as their working lives get increasingly busy, so we reflect their needs in everything we do. The Institute’s finances are a function of how well we satisfy our members needs and wants.

4. Which scientists (from the past or present) do you most admire and why?
Kathleen Lonsdale, for her early work with X-ray crystallography of organic compounds. It was a foundational area of study for chemistry degree’s research year and that year reignited my love of the subject.

5. What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career?
Managing the financial impact of rapid technological change that transforms / revolutionises industries. Sometimes it’s hard to lift your head up from day to day and see the bigger picture, especially when its only coming into view. AI will be a huge change to science, its application in the medical field and to the Institute. I am excited to see how it develops and the part we can play.

6. What is your proudest achievement (in work or out)?
Marrying my beautiful wife and having two daughters with her.

7. Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
My wife.

8. If you could go back 20 years and meet your former self, what advice would you give?
Enjoy the moment you are in and don’t worry so much about the future.

9. When you are not working, how do you like to spend your time?
I enjoy the gym, gardening, and long countryside walks with my wife.

10. What might we be surprised to know about you?
I’ve come up blank on a response to this one! Now that might surprise those that know me.
