Simon Thompson CEO leadership award7 October 2021

We are delighted to announce that the British Institute of Radiology’s chief executive, Simon Thompson was the winner of the 2021 CEO Leadership Award at the Memcom Awards last week. The BIR also was awarded "Highly Commended" in the Best Membership Organisation category.

The Memcom Awards are the annual celebration of excellence for membership organisations. The BIR was also shortlisted for Membership Organisation of the Year, winning the Highly Commended award in that category, along with eLearning Initiative of the Year for its popular BIR Video Courses and Team of the Year for its Education Team.

The CEO Leadership Award recognises leaders who have had an impact in advancing their organisation as well as having an impact on society at large.

During Simon Thompson’s tenure paid membership has increased by more than 50%, readership of the BIR’s journals has more than doubled, and there has been a fivefold increase in the number of delegates educated at BIR events. The Institute has also led important work in staff and patient  safety and developed strong links with sister societies around the world.

The BIR President, Dr Sri Redla, said: “I would like to warmly congratulate Simon Thompson on being conferred this prestigious award. Simon has been a pillar of strength to the BIR, leading the team with a sense of calmness and taking some astute decisions through some challenging times. The results speak for themselves and I can wholeheartedly say that it is a real pleasure working with Simon."
